Course description: Our approach will be largely an in-depth,
"major authors" study of the literature produced in England from
1798 to roughly the end of World War I. In addition to close readings
of the texts, we will focus upon their historical contexts and,
at the same time, examine a number of significant trends and issues
which continue to bear a cultural impact on our own lives (e.g.,
we will look at such things as individualism and the rise of democracy,
the position of women, industrial society at its best and worst,
and science vs. religion). Finally, we will try to gain an understanding
of what it was like to live in nineteenth-century England.
Prerequisite: ENGL 1302 or 1301 with a minimum grade of C and
concurrent enrollment in ENGL 1302.
Responsibilities: You will be expected to read each assignment
and actively participate in all online discussions and exercises.
There will be unit tests, two short critical papers, and three major
examinations.
